Gustavo Eiffel realizou sobre o Douro um audacioso e criativo trabalho. A construção da Ponte iniciou-se em Janeiro de 1876, concluindo-se em Outubro de 1877. 1 review of Ponte Maria Pia "I had heard there was an Eiffel bridge in Porto, but had gotten confused thinking it was the Ponte Luis I. What I was looking for was the Ponte Maria Pia, completed by the legendary Gustavo Eiffel in 1877, roughly the same era as the Crystal Palace.

Ponte Maria Pia var en järnvägsbro sedan byggandet i slutet av 19-talet, fram till 1991 när tåg slutade använda den. Denna bro är skyldig i sin design till Gustav Eiffel och liknar dubbla däck Dom Luis I-broen, med vilken den ibland förvirras. Ponte Maria Pia har dock bara ett däck.

Beschreibung. Die Ponte Maria Pia führte die Linha do Norte mit der portugiesischen Breitspur (1665 mm) über den Douro. Die Brücke und mit ihr die kurze Strecke zwischen den Bahnhöfen Vila Nova de Gaia und Porto-Campanhã blieb natürlich eingleisig, als die Linha do Norte ab der Jahrhundertwende zweigleisig ausgebaut wurde.

The success of the Ponte Maria Pia provided the inspiration for later bridge design throughout Europe, especially where steep river gorges had to be crossed. Among these are the Garabit Viaduct in France, designed by Eiffel, and the Luis I bridge, built on the Douro just upriver from the Ponte Maria Pia and designed by Eiffel's chief assistant, Theophile Seyrig. Resting on a parabolic arch spanning 160 meters, the Ponte Maria Pia was the longest iron arch bridge in the world at the time of its construction.
